NO WOJtK AND DOCTOR'S BILLS.

A meeting- of creditors in the estate of Reginald [Freeman, commercial traveller, of Auckland, was held) in the office of the official assignee yesterday, i the assignee (Mr. W. S. Fisher) presiding. THe statement of the bankrupt's financial position showed that the total unsecured debts were £238 Is 6d. The assets were nil. Mr. Stilling represented Messrs. Gass and Walker, the principal creditors, The banlcrupt, in his sworn statement, said the amount owing to Messrs. Gass and Walker had been the: cause of his being adjudicated a bankrupt. He had j been In their employ t and the debt was ; due to a loan. After leaving their employ , lie had been out of fork for several long J periods, and his wife had contracted a serious fllnesa, which had involved considerable expense. -"■■'■ His intentions-were i perfectly honourable, and with " steady I work and good health he would ; repay I every penny he owed. Cross-ftxamined by Mr. Stilling, bankj rupt said that he had paid the doctor I about £30, while still owing over £150 to Messrs. Gass and Walker, but aa it was a case of life and! death with his wife ' he considered he was justified in! doing so. He was now earning £5 a week, and ; he believed that the firm for which he. was working was going to allow him £1 a week for boarding expenses. Continuing,, bankrupt said that his employers were willing to make his creditors an offer, but he could not say how. much , the offer would be. , ,-

The assignee pointed out that judgment had been obtained 1 against bankrupt in May last, and since then he had not made the slightest effort, to save anything, out of his earnings with a view to paying his debts. Were the offer of his employers not a satisfactory one the assignee would .be compelled to lay the facts of , the. case Before a. Judge.
