UNUSUAL [THEFT CHARGE.
CHRISTCHURCH FIRM'S. RECORDS.
A chaiige of having stolen on January 25 records of the.Craddock Hardware, Company, Ltd., consisting of a private ledger, a, cash book, railway sales journal, Addington and Hillside files, a list of book debts at balance, original set of stock sheets, and eight pages from general ledgers, was preferred against Frederick John Craddock, of Christchurch, before Messrs. J. A. Langford, L. W. Andrews, and C. E. Palmer, J.P.'s, at the Police Court yesterday. : The' accused was also charged with being about 'to leave New Zealand without intending to make adequate provision ■ for the • maintenance of his wife.
The accused, lately a member of the firm of the Craddock Hardware Company, Ltd., of Christchurch, vms arrested by Detective Hammond on Wednesday night as he was about 'to board the ■• south express. He left Christchurch at the end of January, and has since been staying at various places in Auckland. Several of the missing records were- found among his effects. He was remanded to appear at Christchurch on Thursday. !; The accused was represented by Mr. J. F. Stilling, who asked that bail might be allowed. This application was opposed by Chief-Detective McMahon, who stated that the accused had really absconded from the South. Since leaving .
