OUT OF OFFICE.
PA R LL ROUGH COUNCIL.
THE FINAL MEETING.
UNION .WITH THE CITY.
The Parnell Borough Council at the conclusion of its usual meeting last night ceased-to exist. After the business of the meeting was finished the terms of the amalgamation .01. the borough -with the city wero read, and the document was signed by the Mayor, two councillors, and the town clerk. .
The Mayor, Mr. R. S. Briggs, in the course of a brief address to the council, said that in many ways he was extremely sorry that the council had held its last meeting. He had for 22 years • been a member of the -council, and during that time ho had had an excellent opportunity of witnessing the thorough way in which it had always conducted its business. With the small amount of capital at its disposal it had done wonders. The work of kerbing ,and channelling the various streets had been carried out, while it had never been found necessary to negotiate for .a loan for the purpose of keeping up the condition of the streets. . The city would therefore find that the borough had used all its available funds to the best purpose. The Mayor thanked the members of the council for their invaluable support during his four years of office, and also expressed his gratitude at the manner in which the council's staff, in particular the town clerk and the'foreman, had carried oat its duties. The sentiments expressed by the Mayor were endorsed by all the "members present, and also by Mr. J. Thornes, a former Mayor of the borough. On the motion of Mr" W. Thomas, the Mayoral collar of the borough was presented to the retiring Mayor, Mr. R. S. Briggs. Mi-. Briggs was also made the recipient, of the Mayoral chair, which he had occupied for the past four vears. -. i. • Peeling reference was made by the Mayor a.id all the members to the valuable services rendered to the council and to the borough by the town clerk,' Mr. Benjamin Gilmer, who had fulfilled the duties of town clerk of Parnell for the past 20 years. On the motion of the Mayor it was decided that the claims of the town clerk for additional payment for extra services rendered to the council be recognised, and the sum of £260 be paid to him in full settlement of such claims. ;. The Mayoral hammer was made the property of the council, to be disposed of at a later function. I'" 1 ' •-, ! ; The Mayor then declared the business of the meeting finished, , and the council as a separate local body was dissolved.:
