"THE TRUTH ABOUT GERMANY."

LECTURE BY HERR HEMMER, As interesting and instructive address, " The Truth About Germany," was given in the Town Hall concert chamber last night by Herr Heinrich Hemmer, a Viennese author and journalist. Therewas a very large attendance and the lecture apparently met with the hearty approval of the audience. In the course of his address Herr Hemmer dealt with German agriculture. Cultivation in Germany, ho said, was intense, and during the next decade 9,000,000 acres of waste land would be utilised. Without anxiety, Gormanv contemplated the prospect of holding 80,000,000 to 100,000,000 in its narrow boundaries. Emigration had practically stopped. Germany' was not compelled to acquire colonies to dispose of its em-plus population. Extensive colonial areas absorbing great masses of population would even be considered by the Government to have _ a weakening effect. The desire to acquire European territory, he said, existed neither in the hearts of the German people nor in the dreams of the Government. Herr Hemmer described Anglo-German industries, the pleasures of the German cities, art enthusiasm, Socialism in Germany, and German ideas on morals. He dealt at some length with. the politics of Germany and explained that the Germans were peace-loving and had no desire to go to war with any nation. In conclusion, lie urged the necessity for the Teutonic races to maintain peace, statmg that those who worked to brinethem asunder, consciously or unconsciously* were working for world war, but those who worked for an understanding, intel- , lectual, political, ethical, or social, wero working for world peace. Herr Hemmer enriched his lecture with an excellent series of lantern slides, scenic, industrial, humorous, and topical. His remarks were punctuated with frequent applause from his audience.
