GISBORNE-OPOTIKI ROUTE.

SHORTENING THE DISTANCE. [IIY TKLECBAVn. — OWN' CORRESPONDENT.] GISBORNE, Saturday. Gii.vmwu.T Gisborne and Opotiki are being brought into closer touch by the advancement of the railway and. the changing of routes which reduce the distance between the two places. With the advent, of the Wnioeka Valley bridle-track, which commences five miles beyond Ma.ta.-wai and goes to within 15 miles of Opotiki, where it joins a dray road, the distance has been further reduced by from 10 to 13 miles. This will make it possible for a person leaving Opotiki early in the. morning to reach Gisborue the same day. Another fortnight should see the completion of the track. There is only one bad river crowing, at Manganuka, and a few days will see the completion of the bridge that the Public Works Department is constructing there.
