FERRY CONTROL.
BIRKENHEAD TAKES NO ACTION.
A copy of the resolution recently passed by the Devonport Borough Council, protesting against the endeavour of the Auckland Harbour Board to obtain legislation empowernig the Board to establish and control ferry services within the Port of Auckland, wa3 received by the Birkenhead Borough Council last night. The Mayor explained that the matterhad been informally discussed recently at Devonport by members of the Devonport, Northcote, and Birkenhead Councils, when, a further conference was suggested.Mr. C. E. Campbell favoured the Board having control, and questioned the statement of the Devonport Council that "the rights of the local bodies on the northern shores of the harbour, to municipalise the ferry services would be abrogated if the Board obtained power to control the ferry services within the harbour."
The Mayor said they could not prevent a private company from starting, and he considered that the Board was the proper body to control the service. Mr. F. M- King: There is no question about that.
The Mayor, continuing, said that a mistake was made when the control was ever taken away from the Harbour Board, as the Board conld act as a check upon the companies in safeguarding the interests of the passengers and the districts affected.
The letter was received, no attempt being made to rescind the previous decision of the Council that no action be token in the matter-
