CHRISTCHURCH ST. HELENS
ACCOMMODATION OVERTAXED. [by. TELEGRAPH.—OWN CqRBESPONDEOT.] CHRiSTCHtmcB, Thursday. During the last year 262 babies were' born in the Christchurch St. Helens Hospital. The staff also provided nurses in 94 maternity cases outside tho institution. Some of those latter cases were attended in the homes of the patients, and others were attended in cottages in the neighbourhood of the hospital, thero being no bods available in the institution. Inquiries into the position were mado by a reporter, who learned that there are only 16 beds in the institution, and that it frequently occurred that these were all occupied. Patients then had to be taken to one of the neighbouring cottages Sometimes patients were taken to a private nursing homo, and for these the Government paid the fee of £* 2s per week collecting only the St. Helens Hospital fee of 30s per week.
The demand for beds under the old regulations, which fixed the wage limit at £3, was distinctly in excess of the ac commodation. The result of the extension of the wage limit to £4 will undoubtedly be a still larger demand on the hospital" Cases will either have to he declined or arrangements made to accommodate them at private nursing homes.
