FOOTBALL.

THE rugby game. OPENING OF THE SEASON. CITY DRAW WITH PONSONBY. WINS FOR PABNELL AND MAR IST BROTHERS' OLD BOYS. Tun Auckland Rugby Union's senior chain[lionship competition for 1912 opened on. Saturday at Alexandra Park. There waa ail excellent attendance of the public. Tho weather was cold, but fine, until after the half-time bell had sounded, when a few showers of light rain fell. A fair breeze was blowing at first, bat it dropped to a calm. The grounds were rather heavy, especially No. 1 ground, on the .surface of which there was a fair amount of moisture, causing tho ball to become very slippery. . , This season there are only sax teams in the senior competition. Grafton and North Shore are still unable to raise senior fifteen*, and the Newton Club is also in that position. College Rifles, who won the junior championship last year and the season before, have moved up into tho senior grade. . The interest of the spectator* was fairly evenly divided between the City-Ponsonby match, and the game between Marist Brothers' Old Boys and University. Tho former ended in a draw, three points each, 11. Thomas 'scoring a try for City, and Jones obtaining one for Ponsonby. The final stages of the game were very interesting. The most open of the three matches was that between University and Marist Brothers' Old Boys. University were beaten by 16 points to 8. Tries were scored for Maris* Brothers' Old Boys by Curran, J. O'Brien, 1 Gallagher, and Carroll; B. O'Brien converted two. Fryer, the ex-Canterbury and New Zealand representative threequarter, and Bilkey scored tries for University, Macky con- ' verting one. College Rifles struggled, gamely against the heavier and more experienced Paxnell • : : team, but were beaten by 14 points to 3. For Parnoll, tries were scored by Hardwick, Wilson, Hogan, and Edwards. Hard wick converted one. Weston scored a. try for College Rifles. CITY V. PONSONBY. ' lie two old rival clubs, City and Ponson- . by, met on No. 1 ground, and settled down to a close but rather doll game. Most of tho work was done by the forwards, which were evenly balanced. City won the toss, and started with a fair breeze in their _ favour, but the wind dropped later on. , The kick-off brought play into City's 25, where it remained until P. Thomas (City's halfback) sot the ball from a line-out, and H. . Thomas, Ma gee. and Power took it on until a forward pass from Power to Speight ' ' stopped the rush, on Ponsonbys 25 line. Bagged play between the two forward divisions, in. Ponsonby's end of the field, prevailed for tome time. B. Mage® had an unsuccessful penalty shot at gaol from an aoate angle. A long exchange of kicks left - ? play at half-way, but City attacked again, there was a scramble on the blue's line, and ,i Ponsonby forced. The next incident of note was a. good ran by Bater. the Ponsonby centre thjeqnarter, bat he spoilt a' movement dangerous to City by a bad pass. Francis. led a good rush.'which swept H. 'Thomas over City's line with the ball. City got the ball.from, the resulting scpum, syds out, and cleared their line. : Cross had an unsuccessful penalty! shot - a,v City's goal. And then gto Bpt>iV*»tergood movement. - ~lt tßS^wFWW* ,! through getting ahead ■of Walsh while the latter still hod the' ball. ;; r When the quarter ended Ponsonby was still In City's territory. - ' i . 'For some" time after changing ends the play hong just in Ponsonby'# (side of the V' - half-way mark.- Then- Wainwright and - • Forsyth led a rush that swept through the J . Ponsonby backs. . Forsyth picked up the .|! v /v. *, Hball, . "bat grounded it just outside the line, r \ an making another attempt to get the ball v;' •over Ponsonby's line he was tackled, and a scrummage was taken ■ syds out. The "ball came out to P. Thomas, and then to 21. Thomas, who scored near the, corner. iMagee failed to convert. City, 3; Ponsonby, 0. City attacked again, and Magee punted , high, but the red and black forwards overTan the ball, and Avery kicked to touch at half-way. City were soon back in Pon- ' v i sonby's 25, where Magee gave Stewart a, I pass. Stewart cut in a little too soon, and j he was collared. Basmussen led a good rush by City's forwards, stopped only 6yds •from Ponsonby's line, by Cross tl'onsonby's * fullback) marking. The ball came across to Stewart, who missed it, and MeGrcgor •napped the ball and raced down the held. Just as Fitzgerald stopped him. McGregor • 'passed to Jones (Ponsonby's right wing-tbree--1 quarter), but Jones missed the ball. City's * lorwards retaliated with a good rush. This time Jones stopped them with a good touch- ■ line kick. Half-time was called with the score unaltered. " .. ' Play remained in midfleld for some time after resuming. Presently a hard punt by ■a. City player sent • the ball oven the blues line, a force-down resulting. Walsh stopped a good rush by the reds, but City attacked 'again strongly. The ball came across the field in a passing movement by the City backs, but Speight missed a pass when there was a good opening for a try before him. The ball dropped at Speight's feet, and he • dribbled it over the line, and lost it, Pon■onby forcing. City returned to the attack, and Magee failed with a shot at goal from ' a mark near the touch-line. Nicholson , started, a • Ponsonby rush, which Stewart "broke up with a good kick into touch, and then Francis spoilt another blue rush by getting off-side. A City attack . smot&ered Hater, Who had the ball, but the Ponsonby forwards came round and saved the situation. A mark by Cross stopped another rush by the reds. i Soon after the start of the filial quarter, Mi the blues worked into City's 25, but Bater missed a pass, and with it a good chance for a score. City swept on to the attack, and H. Thomas and Stewart were, prominent in taking the ball well down the field. However, a sudden change came over matters. Fitzgerald missed a kick, and Dervan got the ball, but he passed it forward just ,-when City's supporters were becoming anxious. Bush and counter-rush on City's side of the half-way line, an attack on Ponsonby's end, then another blue rush were followed by Fitzgerald mulling, only to find Gil lard (Ponsonby's centre-threeqiiarterj, 1 ,< <also missing a chance, and so relieving the 1 -v" 'tension. Sellars led the blues, to City's line, - -on' which tight work resulted. From a • iscrum the ball was shot out on the blind • vi' aide to Jones, who crossed the line, and a ;V. 'scored near, the corner. Cross's kick at ' goal ■ was i a good one, . but ineffectual. ■City, 3: Ponsonby, 3, The blues were soon ■'v Jjadk■ at City's end, with both teams making "strenuous .efforts. Power brought " trouble to his own side by running across the front of a Ponsonby rush, but the City * forwards came round and saved. The reds swept on, with B. Magee prominent. Speight Jacked the ball, on, McGregor and Cross were " (beaten, and Magee came in hot pursuit of the ball, with the spectators excited. But just on the Ponsonby goal-line Magee tried to gather in the ball—and knocked it on, into the hands of Jones, who marked. So :what seemed to bo an almost certain try lor City was lost. ; Cross's 'kick failed to reach the touch-line, and City set up a rush. Nicholson got off-side, and B. Magee took ia penalty kick at Ponsonby's goal. Bat the "ball was slippery, and the kick sent it merely across the field. The Ponßonby forwards were bunched near the mark from which the kick was taken, and if the City forwards had been a little quicker they would have had a good chance of breaking through the blue backs when the ball came across. However, they missed the opportunity, and by the time they got the ball going Ponsonby was more prepared, and Webb saved with a touch-line kick. The bell then rang. - The teams were:—City: Fitzgerald, StewS rt^ ow ® r ' Speight. 11. Magee. H.
