A LEONARDO DA VINCI.

By Telegraph..— Association.—Copyright ■■" . ' . Paeis, August 22. Leonardo da Vinci's " La Joconde," one of the world's most famous portraits, painted on a wooden panel, has been stolen from the Louvre.

Leonardo da Vinci, ".the. famous Italian painter, architect, engineer, -sculptor, and musician, was born in 1452. He painted several well-known pictures, the "" best monument of his genius, and one of the world's masterpieces, being the famous " Last Supper which he was commissioned to paint on a wall of the refectory of the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, in Milan. The execution of ibis work extended over several years, it being completed in 1498. The after history of the picture is a sad one. Owing to the dampness of the wall and the method of oil painting upon plaster adopted, it soon showed signs of deterioration; it was frequently found necessary to re-touch it. Leonardo was a contemporary of Michael Angelo, and considerable rivalry existed between the two artists. Leonardo's later years were spent in France, where he died-in 1519.
