PURCHASES BY THE CROWN.
AREAS THROWN OPEN.

Wellington, Wednesday. A return showing the area of land purchased by the Crown from the natives since the resumption of purchase in 1905, was presentedjto the House of Representatives this afternoon. The statistics, which were asked for by Mr. Hemes (Tauranga) do not include any purchases under the Native Land Act, 1909. The return is as follows: Opened for Year. Purchased. Settlement. Acres. Acres. 1906 .-.. ... Nil . Nil ' 1907 ... ... 13,967 800 1908 ... ... 249,034 Nil 1909 ... ... 6,935 '-11,030 1910 15,587 - 54,501 The area at present occupied by Europeans is 64,533 acres. During the 12 months from July 1, 1910, when the board came into existence, till June 30, 1911, the Waikato-Maniapoto Maori Land Board has dealt with 173,125 acres of native land. Of that area 103,888 acres have been sold, and 69,237 acres leased.
