Mr. Carmichael (Acting-Chief Secretary) told a deputation representing the Steamship Owners' Federation and merchants that the Government had provided an additional £160,0 CX) for resumptions in connection with removing the congestion along the waterfront, besides which extensive works were in progress, to this end. The Harbour Trust proposed finishing, within 15 months, a road of from 80ft to 100 ft wide round the harbour from Circular Quay to Kent-street. ADDRESSES TO THE KING. (Received .Tune, 14, 10 par..) Little, of the Papuan development syndicate, located one 12ft and two 3ft seams of coal on the recent expedition. THE YONGALA INQUIRY. Brisbane, June 14. The Yongala inquiry has concluded the taking of evidence, which was mostly conjecture and supposititious theories. The finding has been reserved. FOOTBALL FINANCES. Sydney, June 14. The tour of the Queensland League footballers yielded a profit of nearly £1000 for three matches. SMALL ARMS FACTORY. Fremantle, June 14. Engineer-Captain Clarkson, who conducted the arrangements in connection with the Lithgow small arms factory, has returned to the Commonwealth. He states that it will undoubtedly be the most up-to-date and best-equipped factory in tho world. H. B. IRVING'S VISIT. Fremantle, June 14. Mr. H. B. Jrving and his wife (Miss Dorothea Baird), with their company, are passengers by the Orsova. They commence a 26 weeks' tour of Australia, opening with " Hamlet" in Sydney on the 25th inst. Miss Ethel Irving and her company were also passengers by tho Orsova. THE FITZROY TRAGEDY. Melbourne, Juno 14. Mrs. Russell, who poisoned her sister! (Miss Ford) and then herself at Fitzroy, attempted suicide two years ago by throw-* ing herself into the Yarra, but was res-< cued. She then promised not to again attempt suicide unless she was sure hep, sister would not' suffer in consequence.:) She knew that she would not always be able to conquer the impulse towards self-, destruction.
FLOODS IN VICTORIA. Melbourne, June 14. Continued heavy rains have caused seri> ous floods in Gippsland. Many dwellings are not habitable, and enormous damage to winter feed and crops has been caused.; Onions and potatoes in pits have been destroyed, and farmers have been forced to remove their families. 'Hie Yarra is the highest for ten years, and is overflowing its banks at several places. Many vegetable gardens near Melbourne have been destroyed.
