Jhe Railway Department has apparently inaugurated a system of ticket inspection *faich has a resemblance to that in operation on the various tramways. The passengers by Inst night's mail express from toe South were surprised shortly after '"6 train had' left Ashburton to be met with a request to produce their tickets for Wspection. The official who made tho Wttand was in plain clothes, and ho was •objected to a good deal of chaff by pasAngers. An inquiry was made as to * authority ho had to demand the • lc kets, and he promptly produced tho authorising document.
