MAKING A NATION.

Tiro life of the American people as a nation springs from the war of North and South. War brings peace, just as a stretched elastic switches together when you let go. 'Hie social conditions, the actualities attending that war form the basis of Mr. R. W. Chamber's novel, " Ailsa Pago" (Appletou's, 6s). Ailsa is a beautiful widow. Berkeley is a fast young man welded into steely condition again by action after rotting among the clinking glasses of peace. The book moves along like the tramp of armed men. All the chaotic selfishness of North and South march to the beat of drums. Ailsa enrols as a nurse, Berkeley joins the lancers, houses are divided against themselves, but the future of America is beaten into shape. And through it all moves the lovo story of Ailsa and Berkeley like a star shining through clouds. It is a vivid page in history drawn from the heart.
