[from our own correspondent. ]
lUkoton'GA, May 18. Queen* Makka, who had reigned for 40 years.passed away on May 1, at the ago of 72 years. The late Queen had been ailing for some considerable time, and the end had been expected for the last two months. During her illness she had received every attention from Dr. Perceval, the chief medical officer. At the time of her appointment as Queen she was living at the neighbouring island of At in, with her husband, the late Ngamarau-Ariki, who predeceased her some six years ago. When the federation of tho Cook Islands was formed, she was appointed chief of tho Federal Government by reason of her being the oldest ariki. not because she was the senior of tho arikis. When .Mil kea was selected ariki Itangi was also nominated for the arikiship, and before she died Makea, expressed a wish that liimgi should succeed her, but this must be dealt with by the Federal Council. It. is generally anticipated that tho Council will uphold Makea's wish.
