FOOTBALL.
THE RUGBY GAME.
AUCKLAND UNION.
CITY'S PROTEST DISMISSED.
A MEETING of the Management Committee of the Auckland Rugby Union, was held in the Amateur Sports Clubroom last evening. Mr. G. Dixon (chairman) presiding. There were also present Messrs. M. J. Sheahan, C. P. Stichbury. 11. Conquer, S. W. Someriield, F. J. Ohlson, and C. V. Langsford (secretary).
Cross-country Championship: A letter was read from the Auckland centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, asking whether the Auckland Rugby Union would unite with the centre in holding the five-mile cross-country championship of New Zealand in conjunction with one of the Saturday matches. It was stated that in the event of a favourable reply the centre will apply for the allocation of the championship. The committee decided to support the proposal, provided suitable arrangements can be made.
Players Re-graded: On the application of the University College Club, R. P. Hunt and N. A. Campbell were granted permission to play in the second grade.
North Auckland Union: The secretary of the Hikurangi Union wrote stating that his union would not apply for affiliation this season. He stated that after negotiating with Whangarci and other parts of the North they had succeeded in forming a North Auckland Union, and as such will apply for affiliation to the Auckland Union. The new union expects to raise and send a good team against the Auckland representatives. As the outcome of the conference between the Hikurangi and Whangarei Unions, it was decided that the North Auckland Union consist of all clubs between Whangarei and Kawakawa, these to be divided into northern and southern divisions. The former will comprise Hikurangi and affiliated clubs, and the latter Whangarei and affiliated clubs. Each division will manage its own matches. Interdivision matches will be played at the end of each round. The management committees will consist of one representative from each club. Protests: A protest from the City clnb against the win of Ponsonby being allowed to stand was read. The ground of the protest was that one of last Saturdav's Ponsonby team (C. C. Clark) played for the North Shore Albion Northern Union football team in a match against Newton Rangers last season. It was stated that in that match several known professional players took part. A member of the North Shore Albion team gave evidence that Clark took part in a match on the day the King died. This was not a regular match, the fixtures having been cancelled. No money was taken at the gate. Clark said he was nominated for membership in the club without his permission, and he only took part in the game on the assurance that it was not a match. He had no idea of playing the Northern Union game, and went down to the ground quite unprepared to play football. In that game the hacks were changed during the game. He did not know that his name was published in the list of teams for the regular matches. The committee discussed the matter fully, after which they decided that the fact of Clark having played in a Northern Union practice game did not make him a professional, and the protest was therefore dismissed. Grafton V. grade team protested against Parnell's win being allowed to stand, they alleging that the winners had played an overweight player. The player attended, and asserted that he was properly weighed. The Weighing Committee's book proved that the player was weighed. The protest lapsed owing to Grafton not attending to support it.
