PAYMENT FOR DRAINAGE.

THE FIRST CONTRIBUTION.

TO BE LEVIED SHORTLY.

Now that work in connection with the carrying but of the main drainage scheme is well under way, the ratepayers of the Auckland and suburban drainage area will shortly bo called upon to pay their first contributions towards it. Up to the present, the Board's outlays have been met out of loan money, but the Auckland and Suburban Drainage Act, passed in 1908, provides that the income and revenuo for the Drainage Board shall consist of contributions to be levied upon and paid by the contributing local bodies, but no contributions shall be payable by any contributing body during the first two years after March 31, 1909." The two years prescribed having elapsed, the Board must now call upon the different local authorities to contribute, and the local bodies will be obliged to strike a rate for the purpose, or supply the amount out of general account. Asked by a Herald representative yesterday what would be the actual revenuo required by the Board to meot its liabilities during the ensuing 12 months, Mr. li. H. Irwin, secretary to the Board, stated that £6248 would be required. Basing the assessments to be made upon the proportion the ratable capital value of each district bears to the ratable capital value of the whole area, the contributions from the different local bodies may be estimated as follows :— £. s. d. Auckland City 3,425 4 0 Mount Eden Borough ... 547 6 0 Kcmuera Koad Board ... 513 2 9 (Jrev Lynn Borough 367 12 6 Mount Albert Borough ... 359 8 0 J'arnell Borough ... 343 3 0 Newmarket Borough ... 144 15 6 Epsom Road Board 233 3 0 One-tree Hill • Koad Board (part) 126 6 6 Eden Terrace Road Board ... 90 13 0 Archhill Road Board ... 54 0 0 Point Chevalier Bond Board... 43 8 0 Total 6,243 2 9 The Drainage Board will meet on Wednesday next for the purpose of making the assessments. It is anticipated that tenders will be invited next week for the construction of No. 5 section of the main intercepting sewer from Union-street to Cox's Creek. The cost of this section will probably be between £35,000 and £40,000, and "will bring the total cost of the Board's works in hand and completed to over £200,000.
