SPORTING.

I AUTUMN RACING CARNIVALS r AUCKLAND RACING CLUB. ' "GOOD SPORT AT ELLERSLIE. CHAMPAGNE STAKES WO* BY MISCOUNT. The Britisher has always boon taught that he is undemonstrative, giving hut faint outward expression of his feelings: but such conditons as those which favoured the Easter day races at Kllerslio yesterday show that., whoa ho is in the mood ho -itishor Han be a joyous, noisy follow, rcflccti. . the brightness and gaiety of which ho it so important an element. Tlka day was bright, without being sultry. and the gathering was a splendid one. It. -was not to bo expected that it would excel the record assemblage on Auckland Cup day, but it was estimated to be a record assembly for an Easter meeting. Kllerslio presented a scene of wonderful freshness and beauty. The flowerbeds which surround and sprinkle the lawns were aflame ■with autumn blooms, and, with the crisp greens of the lawns, they formed a charming picture against, the background of white buildings. The day was one of vivid contrasts, for while the permanent beatifies of tho course were very similar to those of the summer meeting, the people reduced the tone of the picture. The autumn gowns of the ladies were darker than the ephemeral costumes that brightened the course a few months ago, and there seemed a larger proportion of men in their conventionally sombre clothing. Among the visitors wore the Governor (Lord Islington), who was accompanied by Lady Islington. Miss Stapleton-Cotton, and Captain W. Shannon, A.D.C., and the inn-Prime Minister (the Hon. James Carroll). The vice-regal party were received on arrival by the president of the club (Hon. E. Mitchelson)., Business on tho totalisators reached largo proportions, tho sum of £26,949 10s being handled, against. £12,992 on tho second day of last year, an increase of £13,957 10s, ana Hiaking'£47,66l for tho two days, an inctraso of £22,841 over the first two days ot xSiU, when the bookmakers wero present. After weighing-out for the first race Fort William was peremptorily scratched by his owner, who had given orders for the horse s acceptance for the St. (Verges Handicap. Alter considering tho matter, the stewards fined tho owner £5, and at the &a.mo tinw cautioned the trainer to bo more, careful in ftituro when carrying out instructions regarding accepting for horses. From first to last the meeting went with 1, good swing, and the secretary (Mr. Hart- ' land) Is to do complimented for tho general ■> arrangements. THE RACING. The programme opened with the Stewards' Handicap, which brought out a field of 10. ("ranin was made favourite, and after her Boa, Elf and Tattoo were in most demand. The history of the race, so far as the leading ■position is concerned, can to related in very i few words, for Tattoo jumped off in front, ' and remained there throughout. At one itage Uranium got to within a length ot the Wler; but she faded completely out of it, jrhen the real test came. A field of 15 went to the post for the Manjero Handicap, Kanewara ruling favourite. As the field settled down Hard Rock went into the lead, and ho was still bowling along in front when the distance was reached. -- littio further on Gloy joined issue with tho leader, and the big chestnut dying away, «lov came on and won by over two lengtns. JFhe winner is a three-year-old half-brother to Sedition. Tho {Champagne Stakes was the next item on the card to which backers had to turn their attention, and when tho numbers went up for the two-year-old race it was found that the field had been reduced to a quin- ; tette. Orion was one of the first to reach . ' the birdcage, and with the son of Obligado carrying ft bright coat it was always a sure thing that lie would rule a strong favourite. Miscount looked bright and: well, and on the strength of a good gallop, which he had • registered during his sojourn at Ellerslie, a good few of the keen ones were found saying a good word for the Hon. J. D. Ormond's representative. Miss Winsome boro a well- ' trained appearance, as also did Sea Pink. General Latour, however, carried the effects of his severe race on the opening day,' and he did not" move attractively. When the ' • field jumped off Miscount and Orton wero found racing stride for stride in the lead. The favourite fell away approaching the three-furlong post, arid Miss Winsome followed Miscount into the straight. The little daughter of Sotilt fought it out gamely all tho way home, but Miscount always looked an easy winner, and he scored a comfort- ■' able victory over the Auckland filly. Miscount was bred privately by his owner. Ho , is a descendant of tho imported sire Birkend. head, and, like most of thiv-progeny of the Orm j horse, he shows size and substance, v.. A good-looking field of nine was saddledlip to contest the St. George's Handicap, and when backers came to operate it was at once made clear that Soultoria would rule favourite. Sedition claimed most support of the others. After Wauehope and North East had set the pace to the back stretch, First Wairiki dashed into tho lead, and he showed the way right down to the half : distance, where North East, who had always been .'galloping well in second place, went, tip with his challenge, and getting the best -CK 'his light-weighted opponent, he drew ? ! away and won easily by a couple of lengths. Mr. J. F. Douglas struck the various stages of the journey as follows:—One furlong. 145.; three furlongs, 38 2-55.; four furlongs, 50s. • five furlongs, lm. 35.; six furlongs, iro. 16 3-55.; seven furlongs, lm. 295. The last three furlongs was covered in 39 3-ss. The Huia Handicap brought out a field of nine. Boanerges ruling a warm favourite, with Kakama and Formby most favoured of the others. ' Tins summing up proved quite accurate, for the three leading favourites fought out tho issue. Turbine showed tho way up to the distance; but the last furj Jon" found him wanting, and Bonaerges, 'I Formby, and Kakama fighting out an inI teresting finish, a half-length victory went | down to the favourite. / The Autumn Steeplechase rarely fails to "create a strong vein of interest, and with eight horses saddled-up to contest the crosscountry event, and tho issuo hearing a very iS • open, appearance, there was much to rivet attention. Loch Fyne wis made favourite. I Romp had most to say in the early stages of the contest; but when it came -to real i, \< business, ho was soon settled. When they reachcd the post and rails at tho top of j I the hill on the last round Mairti was in commmd, with Sol in hot pursuit. In the race Jill the way down tho hill Sol was endeavourIng to cut down his opponent; but the roan * maro still held command when they leaped " -"i t the stone wall. In the run up to the last hurdle Sol rolled into his task with characi.; teristic men ess, and the gallant little son of Sou It, ousting Maidi from the lead just ■ ;;4* lift the concluding obstaclo came to bo | VJ*} negotiated, he came on and won, amidst a display of enthusiasm, which was renewed 1 'Jus P. Brady brought his horse back to the enclosure. '•* The 12 two-year-olds carded for tho Vic'yi • \ .torin Handicap faced the starter, with most ,7V ' Ituonoy available for Bootlo, with Malwa and [Jlad Tidings most in request of the others. ■ Ijßootlo was one of the first to move, and dashing to the head of affairs led throughout., winning from Mahva, with Bellah third. Kanowarra was withdrawn from the Elec.y. tric Handicap, the last event of the day, ■ ' Waving in nine starters. St. Rill was backed , ' Hfc a short price, with Faunus, Urukehu, CulTitian, and Turbine most marketable of the Others. Turbine was early in the lead, and .
