BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH COUNCIL, -■ - - 111 The monthly meeting of tho Birkenhead .. Borough Council was held last night. . Pre- - i sent: Messrs. J. G. Kay (Deputy-Mayor), '.--'J Tom Hadfield, V. A. Pitt, Wm. Wallace, J., $ Gilbert, J. Hadfield, E. G. Skcates, C. E. : £ Campbell, and Thos. Church. It was do-' 'vS cided to notify carters and contractors of tho seriousness of leaving timber, etc.,. -v! across the footpaths after sunset, and refer» ~ ring them to tho by-law regarding such ob- \- J structions. The Harbour Board wrote granting tho Council permission to erect stands *->' near the wharf for fastening leader horses ;; 'f alsj stating that the Board had no objection ' to the Council extending the water channel -V» across tho end of the Board's shed to pre- J vent carts blocking the way to steamers. . Referred to the Works Committee. As noj < ;&l tenders were received for kerbing and chan-; nelling, it was resolved to order tlie material,: and the Works Committee were empowered ' ' to have the work done, and applications, . called for a working foreman to super .- }£ .the work. The Perry Company forwarded- ■ a copy of the charges and time-table for thovehicular ferry service. Messrs. Kay, Camp-' bell and Wallace wero appointed to confer « with the ferry with a view to securing an additional trip per day. It was decided to, ;. 1.:, offer a reward of £2 for information leading; ' ! to the conviction of persons injuring street lamps, and to write the • Birkenhead Gas ••' •' 'regarding tho street lighting. ; -A. letter was received from tho Northoote Council asking that a conference bo lteld to discuss the matter of the recreation reserve at .-Vii the head of Little Shoal Bay, which it was. - suggested should be jointly controlled by the two councils. It was decided to meet' > the Northcote Council at eight p.m. on! • * December 1. Among en- * couraging items noted in the annual reporti -y j was the fact that tho scholars had won 23 vJ.., prizes, and 32 first-class certificates. In both cases the school received the highest number! :V; awarded to any city or suburban school, in I" the Auckland district at the last examina-
tion. - One very pleasing feature was" that# 'vi Miss Mabel Welding had " gained lin the* ' . : ?m senior grade, two years running, the - highest) /-jHj possible number of marks, viz., 100. Tba M school also holds the shield for_ the district :3|p of Auckland. The . school. has increased its ' number during the year, the roll being 17ft : ••sg| scholars, an increase of 16. The Junior ' -X*k Endeavour Society, under the care' of Miss . Xv 1 ! Ethel Mason, has 34 members," and intend holding a sale of work on November 26.' irk i'UM-j aid of Dr. ? Stevenson's Orphanage.. Mr„ S Wilding, sen., treasurer, gave a satisfactory t'-,j report of the school funds. The school is >|§|j in credit. During the year the sunk of £75 was collected by Messrs. Parker and H»6mas ;£[ to increase the school accommo)l*tsosu £33 of this amount being raised by the young ladies' Bible-classes. The Home Mission '(;}} fund abo received from the school the sum "" 'ifi of £3 . 35.. Then followed an excellent' pro- Sjf gramme supplied by. the sobolars. ..
