CEREMONIES AT GISBORNE.

GfSiJORNEr Thursday. In the presence of a large attendance this afternoon Lady Ward named the children's creche, organised by the . Women's Guild, the "Hine Materoa Creche," after Mrs. Carroll, wife of the Native 'Minister, and whom she described as "a distinguished daughter of New Zealand." Sir Joseph Ward and Lady Ward were present.later in the afternoon at the opening of the maternity home that is being established on the lines of the St. Helens homes. f The Government provided the site and gave a subsidy of £1000 on a £ for £ basis on the amount collected in the district. The institution starts thoroughly furnished, equipped, and staffed, free of debt. Lady Ward performed the formal opening ceremony and speeches were made by the Prime Minister, Hon. Jas. Carroll, and Dr. Valintino (Inspector-General of Hospitals). Sir Joseph and Lady Ward were entertained at a public social to-night. EAST COAST RAILWAY TOUR. [BY TELEGRAPH.— OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Gisborne, Thursday. Sir Joseph Ward states that it is his intention at an early date to traverse the route of the Gisborne-Auckland railway with the object of making himself fully acquainted with the nature of the. work and tho country passed through. Sir Joseph intends to return to Gisborne some time before the commencement of next session, and will ride from Motu to the Bay of Plenty.
