THE CITY MORGUE.
A step further has been taken in regard to the erection of a new morgue for the city. The Public Health Act of 1908 makes it incumbent on every borough to provide a suitable public morgue, but in cases whore two or more boroughs adjoin, it then becomes the duty of the borough, having the larger population to provide the morgue, and the adjoining boroughs may bo called on to contribute a share of the cost on a population basis. The proposal now before the Auckland City Council is for the erection of a morgue on the reclaimed ground at Freeman's Bay, on the line of Beaumont-street. Plans were prepared for a morgue on a site in Patte-ton-street, but strong objection was taken to the erection of the morgue on that site, and the Works Committee of the City, Council is now considering whether the plans for the Patteson-street site can bo made available for the new site. Included in the last loan raised by the Council was £1000 for the purpose or erecting a morgue.
