LOCAL BODIES' LOANS.
A SUGGESTED AMENDMENT.
[BY telegraph. —OWN correspondent.}
Wellington, Thursday. It is stated that it is likely that an effort will be made during next session of Parliament to have the State-guaranteed Advances Act of last year amended in the direction of overcoming the difficulties which the local bodies may experience in .' obtaining the money • they require from the Government for what may be called "secondary municipal undertakings, Gay, tramways or theatres.
The matter was brought before the Attorney-General (Dr. Eindlay). He said that he knew of no contemplated attempt being made to alter or amend the Act iu the direction indicated.
Local bodies, the Minister continued, were asking for more than the statute was intended to meet, namely, the primary local needs. The Prime Minister had made it clear that it would bo bad policy to provide money for local bodies for such things as theatres, or for other purely recreative purposes, while money was required for much more pressing needs, such as roads, drainage, bridges, and water supply.
