■ | THE AMERICAN SUBSIDY"' BILL.
Mr. William A. Prickitt, Consul-General i for,the United States of America, has informed a Hkrali') representative that the -■ latest information he has from Washing.ton is to the effect that the Humphrey' Ship : ; Subsidy Bill has received a favourable re-11 port from the Committee of Merchant Marine and Fisheries. The vote was 10 to -seven. Before the Bill passed the com- raj mittee, it was decided that subsidies should not be granted'to third-class vessels, whiotflfl means that subsidies will be granted only§M to vessels having a minimum of 16 knots 1 an hour.' |^p| Mr. Prickitt is of opinion that Ave may any day hear the fate of the Bill, which, he considers, has better chances of passing now than heretofore. Should the Bill 'b&sfs|| corao law, the Consul-General is very hopeful that a new service will be established between the west .coast •of the United f. States and Australasia. Should this cotneto pass, it is' certain Auckland will be made «|| a port of call. , '--;,
