FUNERAL OF DR. LENIHAN.
'A SOLEMN CORTEGE.
SERVICES ': AT ST. PATRICK'S,
Leaden skies and rain driven before fitful gusts of "wind added their "touch, of sombreness to the solemn procession,,/which wended ; its way from : New-street, Ponsonby, yesterday afternoon to St. Patrick's Cathedral, bearing with it the body of the lato Right/Rev.' Dr. 'Lenihan, Roman Catholic Bishop of -Auckland. The cortege was a very long one, and in addition to a strong representation of tho Catholic clergy there were a largo number of representative citizens of all denominations. In spite of the inclement weather tho V. procession ; was , a very long one, comprising , over ", 60 / carnages, and when it reached Queen-street, the leading carriages were more than halfway down tho street before the last had turned, the corner, from ; Wcllesley-street; The v hearse .left the grounds of . the Bishop's house shortly after three p.m., arid arrived at the Cathedral about five o'clock, having :,.traversed Newstreet, College.Hill; Ponsonby, and Karangahape Roads, Pitt, Hobson,> Wellesley, Queen, Custom,, Albert, 'and; Wyndham .Streets. While the : procession was in Queenstreet, a number .■< of business premises closed their : doors temporarily. The; ) : solemn tolling of \ bells resounded from tho various Roman Catholic places ; of worship, and also from the Anglican churches along the route. This solemn '> symphony of i sound ; was swelled by the funeral marches played by a section of , the Garrison ;Band. i -,
