PRODUCE COMMISSIONER'S REPORT. [BY'."'-. TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ? ASSOCIATION.] ' ' Wellington, Thursday. , Tho following:report, dated December 24, 1909, supplied by the Produce Commissioner, London, has been received from the High Commissioner: —As -indicated in the report which I; made to you arid by cable despatched to Wellington last week, the market for Now Zealand ■ butter has been in an unsatisfactory condition, and although it might ha vo" boon expected, owing to the considershrinkage in the supply of Danish; butter and tho increased demand by retailers for their. requirements for the Christmas trade, that prices for New.; Zealand parcels ex Tainui would have been firmly maintained, this was riot done; Agents handling Danish butter advanced; prices :..to : ; their clients. Prices obtained wore 127s to 128s, and in some instances as high as 130s. On the other hand, unfortunately, several agents handling New Zealand butter, instead of holding firmly, appeared to bo nervous, and offered the parcels they, were handling at reduced,'prices.v. Naturally, buyers seeing this .hung back ; and reduced their offers. Several weak holders sold Now Zealand butter, at 108s; to 109s per cwt. In my opinion the price realised for butter on spot the week previous to the Tainui's arrival (112s) should have been . maintained. There was no valid reason for the low prices mentioned being accepted, but naturally when this' was dono stronger holders had , to follow the ''market''and; reduce their, prices accordingly. In- this manner the average quotation.could not be made higher than 110s for New Zealand butter last week. This week, however, owing to.the bulk of the Tairiui's- shipment having .passed into second hands, the mar; . ket has again been firmed up, and 112.- has been ■■ realised. • Now that . tho Christmas trade has been fully satisfied, with»the expectation of a lull in business next week, and at the same time of largo Australian arrivals,' there is a tendency towards lower prices again. Tho Danish quotation is this week being reduced, so.I do not.anticipate that : the New Zealand : quotation ; can be given higher than Ills. -Now Zealand butter : this season; would appear to bo ' moro widely distributed than usual in the hands of selling agents,. among whom there .is• no concentration, as in the Danish trade, for the maintenance of values. ;'■•■ Everywhere satisfaction is expressed with the quality of the butter arriving from the Dominion this season, and although 1 have made numerous inquiries no complaint of fishiness or other faults has been.reported. .Tho cheese market is' very quiet at present, and the outlook is not promising for any advance in price. It is pleasant to have to record the fact that buyers express satisfaction with tho quality of New Zealand cheese, this season. Trade this week has not been at all brisk, 54s per cwt for coloured and 55s for white being now. tho general quotation. •
