London, February 23. Further serious riots occurred today in Philadelphia, where, the tramway employees arc out on strike. The police force was increased to a total of 7000, • but even this great number was powerless to restore order. • ' V
The Mayor then appealed to the military authorities, and 3000 State militia Were ordered out. Their appearance in the streets increased -the fury of the strikers, and their demonstrations became more serious.
They stoned 1 the militia, who fixed bayonets, and, with a series of rapid charges, cleared the streets temporarily, with 50 casualties.
A pitched battle between the police arid the -strikers in the German quarter of the town followed the departure of the militia. , .' The police used their heavy truncheons, mercilessly clubbing the rioters, many of the wounded having to be sent to the hospital.
Three hundred have been arrested, including the leader of the strikers, Clarence Pratt. ■ ;
