THE LIBERAL REVERSES.

CHIEF WHIP DEFEATED.

The principal feature of the results of teh pollings announced this morning is the defeat of the Right Hon. J'. A. Pease, Patronage Secretary to the Treasury and Chief Liberal Whip, who was beaten for Saffron Waldeu (Essex) by Colonel Probyn (Unionist). The Eight Hon. T. W. Russell, VicePresident of the Board of Agriculture, Ireland, has also apparently suffered defeat, although the iigures cabled leave the matter somewhat in doubt. The other important Liberal defeat so far announced has been that of Colonel J. B. Seeley, Under-Secretary to the Colonial Office, who wae defeated for the Abercromby division of Liverpool. NEW ZEALANDER ELECTED. RETURN OF DR. CHAPPLE. Dr. W. A. Chappie, M.D., whose election for Stirlingshire in the Liberal interest is announced this morning, is a well-known Now Zealander. Of Scottish descent, he was born in Otago in 1864, and was educated at the Otago University. He practised in Wellington for a number of years, and unsuccessfully sought election to Parliament as a Wellington representative on ouo to two occasions. At the by-election for the Tuapeka seat in 1908 (rendered vacant by the death of the late Mr. Jae. Bennett) he was elected for that constituency. He sat in Parliament during the session of 1908, but was defeated at the general election at the end of that year. ETHICS OF THE POLLS.

ADVICE TO LIBERAL VOTERS. TO "PROFESS TORYISM."' ..(Received January 23, 5.15 p.m.) London, January 22. The Daily News, one of the leading organs of the Liberal party, says that the Liberal reverses in the counties are due to a reign of terrorism. It states that since the introduction of the Budget a great majority of the large country estate, officers have been dealing out intimidation to their tenants, and that the temporal arm has been reinforced by the spiritual, as the vicars, who are the channels through which the most material bounties are distributed, have been working against the liberals. ........ The Daily News adds that its advice to voters is to profess Toryism, and to vote for the Liberal martyrs on the rack, and to tell verbal untruths rather than to betray their cause. The Radicals complain that the use of motor cars largely explains the Unionist victories in the county pollings.

THE FREE TRADE ASPECT., MR. ASQUITH TAKES COMFORT " VERDICT OF GREAT CENTRES." London, January 21. The Prime Minister, Mr. Asquith, in speaking at Ladybank (Fife), said he would say nothing regarding the general results of the election till the situation was more developed. He remarked, however, that, with the exception of Birmingham and its sphere of influence, Liverpool, and one or two other isolated areas, the whole of the great centres of industry in England and Scotland had given an emphatic verdict in favour of Free Trade. In replying to hecklers, Mr. Asquith declared that he did not favour the nationalisation of the railways. He thought that the present distribution of members was unjust, and that the time had come for an amendment of the method of representation. I

The Daily Telegraph, in referring to the split in the Irish -party, says that the O'Brienites may be a dozen strong in the new House,, and that it seems clear that they will not hesitate to join, the Opposition against the Budget. CHURCH AND ELECTIONS. A SERVICE ABANDONED. London, January 21. The thanksgiving service announced by the vicar of St. John's Church, Plumstead, in commemoration of the time of deliverance of Woolwich from the hands of the Socialists and Sabbath-breakers, as a result of. the defeat of Mr. Will Crooks, has been abandoned owing to the Bishop's disapproval. ,
