[BY TELEGRAPH.— CORRESPONDENT]
CHRisTcmjßcn, Wednesday. A cottage in the Arowhenua pa, near Temuka, was destroyed by fire on Monday. The house was in charge of a little niece of the occupier, who had also to attend to the baby. ■ The girl was in the kitchen warming some food for the baby on a spirit lamp when the lamp exploded and the room was instantly a mass of flames. The baby was in the front room, and the girl made a rush to save it. The flames followed her, but she . managed to snatch the infant up and escape through the front door. The baby's face was somewhat injured by the fire and the girl's forehead was burnt, her hair was singed, and the blouse she was wearing was scorched black.
