A NEW STEAMER.
ARRIVAL OF THE TAINUI.
The latest addition to the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company's fleet, the s.s. Tainui, reached port yesterday from Lyttclton, on her maiden voyage to Auckland. ' ; -j:[f The Tainui is a large, handsomely modelled twin screw steamer of 10,500 gross tons register, and was designed and constructed by Messrs. Workman, Clark and Co., Limited, of Belfast, -about 12 months ago. She has been specially designed to meet the growing demands of the passenger and freight sorvico between London and. New Zealand. Her principal dimensions are: Length between perpendiculars, 477 ft; breadth moulded. 601 ft; depth,. 42£ ft. The vessel has five decks, named consecutively the boat, shade, awning, main, and lower decks, and she has excellent accommodation for '? 114- firsthand second class, and 300 third-class passengers. Tho first class passengers are accommodated in spacious two-berth deck -i cabins, tho second.class in two and three-berth cabins, and tho third class passengers in two, four, and six-berth rooms, all of which are exceptionally well lighted and ventilated. ; Tho first class public rooms are handsome and large, and include a lounge, library, and smoking-room, situated on the shade deck, with the dining saloon on: the awning deck. The second' class ladies' room and • smokingroom, which aro very tastefully decorated, are placed on ■ the shade deck, while tho dining saloon is on the awning deck. The third class accommodation includes a roomy dining saloon at the after end of, the main deck, and largo dining spaces on the lower deck, with a separate, galley and pantry, also a "smoking-room in the after deck-house. Tho vessel is fitted throughout with electric light and bells, while large insulated chambers are provided for the storage and preservation of fresh provisions, meat, fish, and fruit. There aro five holds, three of which are insulated and fitted out for the carriage of frozen meat, butter, cheese, fruit, or other refrigerated cargo. - The cargo is worked by 14 powerful steam winches, with the same number of derricks,' and a special heavy derrick of steel girder construction arranged to lift heavy weights up to 30 tons. Tho Tainui has a sea-going speed of 13 knots. Captain. T. Moffatt, late of the Mamari, is in command of 1 the steamer, and has associated with him the following officers:— Mr. B. J. Bosdet: second, Mr. C. B. Foxley; third, Mr. A. G. Curtis; fourth, Mr. A. Townsend. Mr. G. Grcenhill is the chief engineer, Mr. D. McGowan second, Mr. D. Wainach third. Mr. T. H. Webb fourth. Mr. R. Galoway fifth, and Mr. D. J. McKellar sixth. Mr. E. H. Dav is the chief refrigerating engineer, and Mr. W. W. Ridgwan second.. : Mr. C. J. Hobden is the chief steward. The Tainui covercd_ the distance from Lyttelton to Auckland in the smart time of 47 hours, meeting with,fine weather throughout: tho trip. -She commenced loading general cargo, for London shortly after arrival, and will sail for the. Home port via Wellington at noon oh Saturday.
