A SOLAR OBSERVATORY.

(Received October 28, 12.55 a.m.)

Melbourne,: October 27. v

Lord Dudley presided over an influential meeting to-day to advocate the establishment of a solar observatory. ■..■■..;,

In urging; the importance of the proposal, he said that ono of the main reasons in favour of \ an observatory was' the geographical position of Australia, which was most suitably situated to fill the" gap in the chain of observatories round the earth. The proper conduct of solar research depended upon continuous observations throughout the 24 hours. It was estimated that the initial.cost of the observatory would be £10,000, and the annual upkeep £1500. It was resolved that the establishment of a : solar observatory was desirable, and the Federal- Government was .strongly urged to assume the responsibility of carrying the scheme into effect.'
