RETURNING RIFLEMEN.
VISIT FROM AUSTRALIANS.
[BY telegraph:— press ■ ASSOCIATION, j
Wellington. Wednesday. Several members of the Now Zealand rifle team, accompanied by LieutenantColonel Hughes, manager, returned from Sydney by the Moeraki to-day. •""Colonel Hughes states that definite promises have been received from Victoria and New. South Walos to send a team to .compete at Trentham ' next, March." Captain Dakin, secretary of ' the National Rifle Association of' New South Wales, will endeavour to' come, and Major Payne, secretary of the Commonwealth council, has practically promised to do so. There is a probability that General Hoad, commandant of .the Commonwealth Forces, will also come over.
"We did not' win the Empire match," said Colonel Hughes, "because the winners were better men, and because the conditions as to time, weather, and the range did not suit the New Zealanders." The men also took part in individual competitions, and, generally, did well. Messrs. James, Patrick, Masefield,'and McConnell did not arrive with the party, having gone on to Melbourne.;
