CASE FOR A FLOGGING.
A JURY'S RECOMMENDATION. At the Supreme Court yesterday, before Mr. Justice Edwards, a man named James Campbell was charged with having assaulted two elderly women at Auckland on July 7. Prisoner denied the alleged offences. The jury, after hearing the evidence, brought in a verdict of " Guilty" without retiring. The judge said he was not sure if he should not order the prisoner to be flogged. He asked the jury to express an opinion on the point. After conferring with the other jurors, the foreman said' the jury considered this was a case for making an example of prisoner. The Judge: You think he should be flogged? The Foreman: Yes. The Judge : Thank you. Let the prisoner be remanded till 10.30 to-morrow morning.
