Fire-branding horses and cattle was discussed at a meeting of the Society for the I'rovention of Cruelty to Animals at Wellington on Tuesday, and although eome members thought the system (which is a thousand years old) cruel, none suggested any alternative. Owners would, of course, welcome any method that would not be destructive to a part of the hide. No really permanent brand (except fire-brand-ing) has yet been devised; A fire-branded animal recovers his spirits a good deal more quickly than a human beinjr dees after a small "dental operation.
