COMMERCIAL.

The sharemarket was again quiot yesterday. In investment stocks only one sale was made, viz., in New Zealand Portland Cements (old issue), at 42s 6d. In mining lines business was done in Talismans at. 575, and more wore- sought, after at the same figure, but further sellers required 57s 3d. Waihi Grand Junctions operated freely at from 52a to 51s 6d to 525, the market closing with buyers at 52s 3d and sellers at 52s 6d. Waihi Consolickteds were dealt in at from 5s 6d to 5s 7d to 5s 6d, and Waihi Extondeds at from 7s 3d to 7s 4d to 7s 3d, as against 6s lOd, the closing sale on Saturday. In Thames scrip Waiotahis were considerably easier. As against 8s sd, the closing salo on Saturday, they were dealt in yesterday at from 8s 4d down to 7s Bd, closing with buyers at 7s 7d and sellers at 7s Bd. May Queens, on the other hand, showed a slight advance, selling at 6s 3d to 6s 4d. In other lines Pride of Tokateas sold at from B£d to Is 3d to Is 2d to Is 3d to Is to Is Id to Is; Royal Oaks (con.) at from 3s 2d to 3s 3d to 3s; and Now Waitaias at from Is lOd to Is lid to Is lOd. Little or no chango took place in other stocks.

In the mining market Royal Oaks finned a few pence and Waihi Grand Junctions eased a trifle, but the other quotations were virtually unchanged. There were no transactions to record in. the investment and industrial section of the market. Verv few Auckland, apples have been marketed of late. The monthly shipment of Fijian bananas arrived generally in pood order and met with good competition. Local lemons and passions are now in better demand owing to small supplies arriving from Sydney. Apples: Choice coloured dessert, 9s 6d to 10s 6d case; prime, 7s to 8s 6d; good, 5s to 6s 6d; cookers, prime large 7s to Bs, good 5s 6d to 6s. Grapes : Choice hothouse, Is 6d to 2s lb. Lemons, 5s to os case. Passions, 3s 6cD to 4s 6d box. Tomatoes: Hothouse, choice, 1? 3d to Is 6d lb; prime, KM to Is; tree tomatoes, 4s to 5s box. Values in the South for potatoes have, advanced and ' tho market here is slightly stronger. A moderate business is doing in Southern onions, but Japanese have many buyers at higher figures, as they arc in good keeping condition. The High Commissioner's' market cablegram, dated London, August 21, is as follows: — Mutton : The market is weak, but there is a better demand for light-weight Canterbury at 3d to 2id, according to quality; North Island, 2£d to 2d. Lamb : The market is depressed, as the result of heavy arrivals of Canterbury, which is quoted at 34d for light-weights; heavy-weights, 2jd. Beef: The market is firm, with no change in prices.
