A CLOSE CALL.
KNOCKED DOWN BY TRAMCAR.
A -'narrow, escape from a fatal accident occurred in Queen-street at eight o'clock on Saturday morning. A little girl named Adelaide Jones, residing with her parents in Alexandra-street, got out of a down car at Short land-street, and proceeded to cross over on to the opposite pavement. Her sister, who was with her, noticed a car coming up on the lip-line; and dashed across in safety, but the girl Adelaide, who followed her example, did not fare so well. She was knocked down by the oncoming car, and must have been run over, but fortunately she', was caught by the life-guard, and held there. The car was promptly brought to .a standstill by the motorman, and when the 'little girl was extricated it was found that she was none the worse for her experience, and she was able to w ' home.
