:'-.■ . • ,' WAIHI. > ' ■ [BY TELEGRAPH OWN correspondent.] y | "'v ' \ Waihi, Friday.;'. The Waihi - Borough i Council met last evening, the Mayor (Mr. John Newth) presiding. The district health officer reported a case of enteric fever in Seddon Avenue. Advices * were received crediting the district fund account with gold duty for May £2790 14s lOd, railway j sanitary service £1 17s 6d, and Warden's Court fees £22 7s Bd. Bullion declarations announced the purchase within the borough, since last meeting, of 84960z of gold. Mr. W. M. Jackson, on behalf of the legal profession of. the goldfields, wrote protesting against the abolition ot the District Court, and asking the Council's support. A petition, signed by all the solicitors practising in the goldfields, accompanied ' the protest. The Council decided to communicate with the Minister for Justice, the. Acting-Prime Minister, and Messrs. Poland; and Herries, M.P.'s, urging that the prayer of the petition be granted. In terms of notice given, Mr. Power moved : "That public tenders.be called for the quarrying, crushing, trucking and delivery of metal to the hoppers in Gladstone Koad from the Walmsley Creek quarry, specifications for such work to be considered by the Works Committee." The mover contended that the work could be more cheaply and efficiently carried out under contract than by day labour. After discission, an amendment by Mr. Donaldson, "That the matter stand over until the first meeting of the Works Committee (the engineer to report on the question)," was carried. It was decided to meet the delegates from Waikino on Wednesday next, to consider the proposal to extend the Waihi Borough to include Waikino. Accounts totalling £803 lis 9d were passed for payment. The district fund account showed a total debit balance of £21,860 9s Bd, and gold duty outstanding was given at £712.
