CHEAPENING THE CABLES.
THE NEW PRESS RATES. By Telegraph.—Press Association.— Copyright (Received July 2, 10.50 p.m.) London, July 2. The offer of the Pacific Cable Board to reduce the charge for press" messages from England to Australasia arose through Sir Joseph Ward's proposal to reduce the terminal charges for these messages to a halfpenny, conditional on the Pacific Board reducing its share to 2d. The Pacific Board made a counter offer of 2£d, subject to New Zealand reducing the terminal charges to a halfpenny, in all for the transmission of press messages from England to New Zealand. The rate will operate after 21 days' notice has been given to the Berne Conference, and is expected to be initiated on August 1. AUSTRALIA'S INTENTIONS. (Received July. 3, 1 a.m.) . Melbourne, July 2. The Postmaster-General officially informed the Federal House of Representatives this afternoon of the intention of the Pacific Cable Company to reduce the charges for press messages to and from Great Britain, and said" the Government favoured co-operating by reducing the terminal rate. This rate will probably be reduced to one halfpenny. •
