THE GRAFTON BRIDGE.

CONTRACT CONDITIONS TO BE ENFORCED. At last night's meeting of the Auckland City Council a letter was received from Russell and Campbell, solicitors, Auckland, as follows :"We have been requested by the Ferro-Concreto Company to state that, unless the Council is prepared to make progross payments upon the main arch of Grafton Bridge, it will be impossible for the company to avoid liquidation, and this will probably involve serious delay in carrying out the work. The company anticipates that if the Council will make progress payments on similar terms to those usually adopted, liquidation will be avoided, and the work completed much more £_- peditiously than would otherwise be the case. We shall be obliged if the Council will inform us as speedily as possible whether it is prepared to meet the company in this direction." The city engineer added a memo, as follows :—" I understand that it is the intention of the Mayor to ask the Council to go into committee to hear Mr. Robertson, manager of the company, in reference to this proposition. Under these circumstances it would be better for me to make a statement after the Council has heard Mr. Robertson.'' The Council went into committee upon the matter, and on resuming resolved that the company be informed that it must adhere to its contract.
