SLY GROG-SELLING.
EXTREME SENTENCES IMPOSED. Two middle-aged men, Harry Evans and William Dalziel, nero charged at the Police Court yesterday, before Mr. C. C. Kith-, S.M., with having sold whisky without a license. They were defended by Mr. Singer.
Sergeant Hanson deposed that in company with Constable Montgomery he proceeded, at 4.15 a.m. on Sunday' last, to Witch the residence of accused in Lomestreet. At 6.30 a.in. they heard a woman (ailing out from the adjoining premises. Daniel came out and was followed by Evans. The latter went back into the house, and returned with a tumbler containing what witness took to be whisky. Evans took lialf-a-crown from the woman and returned her some change. The police found on the premises of accused a threegallon jar and seven bottles containing beer and two bottles of whisky. _ Constable Montgomery gave corroborative evidence.
Mary Ann Bollinger said she- lived next door to the accused. On Sunday morning, fooling unwell, she asked one of the totter over the fence for a gla* B of spirite. Some- whisky was brought to her, but she could not. swear by which of the accused' Witness tendered a half-crown, and Evans brought her Is M change. Mr. Kettle said the charge* had been pioved on the direct evidence of the last witness. With regard to Evan* he had been convicted at the end of 1904 on tour charges ot sly grog-selling or which offences he served a torm of three months' imprisonment, in addition to paying a line, of £50. Dakiel had been twice convicted on similar charges. It was a hard matter to catch sly grog-sellers, and he proposed to inflict the severest punishment provided by law. The accused were each sentenced to six months' hard labour. Evans and Dalziel were further charged with being idle and disorderly persons to which they pleaded guilty, and were sentenced to additional terms of three months' imprisonment, the sentences to be concurrent.
