CATTLE-STEALING CHARGES.
[BY TELEGRAPH.--FRESS ASSOCIATION'.] NAHBR, Monday. A charge of stealing 90 head of cattle, valued at £406, the property of Richard Keene and James Reid, was preferred against a man named Samuel Beswick at the Magistrate's Court to-day. Accused pleaded guilty. It was explained that Beswick was appointed manager of the Runanga Station during the owners' absence in England, and he sold the cattle to butchers. When arrested by a detective prisoner admitted his guilt, and offered assistance towards tracing the miss-ing-cattle. Accused was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence, being admitted to bail in self at £250 and two sureties of £125 each. Arising out of the informations against Beswick, William Robinson was charged with having received from him 10 head of cattle, knowing them to have been stolen. Sub-Inspector Dwyer applied for a remand, stating that accused had only been arrested during the luncheon adjournment. Mr. Creswell, who appeared for accused, said that Robinson was a well-known settler, and had resided in Hawke's Bay for 40 years. He had recently sold out in Argyll settlement, and removed his stock to Tauranga, employing a man named Boult as his drover. That was how the trouble had arisen. Accused was remanded on bail. William Boult was then charged with receiving from Beswick, at Runanga, 44 head of cattle, valued at £198, the property of Richard Keene and James Reid, knowing them to have been stolen. Accused, who pleaded not guilty, was committed for trial. William Brewer, charged with stealing 44 cattle from Runanga station, was remanded until to-morrow.
