GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS.
CLEMENTS WINS THE OPEN EVENT. [BY TELEGRAPH.— COItRKSI>ONJ)KNT.] .■■'"•■■■ Dunedin-, Tuesday. TfifK weather to-day was again favourable for the golf championships at Balmnccwan. The open championship was concluded tonight, and Clements," the 19-year-old professional from Auckland, won tins mAtch with tlie good score of 335 for the four rounds of medal play, his cards being 83, 81, 88, arid 83. D. Hood, tho younger brother of tho Aucklnnd professional, finished only one stroke behind Clements, so I; the North island professionals . have thus secured first and second prizes, namely, £25 and £10. By the way, Clements' entry for the championships was not in by tho correct date, and until the very last moment it was uncertain whether ho would be allowed to compete. However, the other professionals were all willing that Clements should be permitted to play, and so ho did, and well too, as tho result has proved. So far no matches have : been played,; as both yesterday and to-day have been devoted to stroke play. However, to-morrow morning the real struggle for the amateur, championship will begirt. H. C. Wright, of Christchurch, plays H. B. Lusk, formerly of Auckland, and now a Shirley player, and Lusk's notorious lack of nerves should carry him through. Saunders plays P. Trolove, a 5 handicap man from Christchu'rch, and it is thought that the North Island man will live, through the first round. Other interesting matches will bo those between B. B. Wood, holder of the Shirley championship, and B. C. Rutherford, a young and promising scratch player, of the same club. H. Smith, the present Otago champion, meets P. Wright, of Timaru. :
