THE TOWN HALL.
Sir,A cutting from your issue of las* month has reached us, containing the news that: "Messrs. R. FarrcU and W. E. Hut* " chison, contractors, also members of , the City Council, and the city engineer, made. ' separate estimates on the basis of tho lowest, tender receivod from the Messrs. Clarke an*} Clarke design, and they are confident tba, cost of our design would- not be less than ,■;'• £85,000. These gentlemen are without, an* knowledge of the details or ' construction « our building, and we do not like their* methods and ideas of fair play. Before th« poll, our " solicitors advised the Mayor an*/" councillors that we were prepared to for* « feit £1000 if we failed to save the r»J«\j payers of Auckland the £30,000. Wo intcri<l * ed exhibiting our working-drawings and cer- , tain most interesting documents in the exhi- * bition, but after being allotted apace tho exhibit was refused room. In conclusion, while regretting the waste of time of th< 46 competing architects, we most, sincere*/ * trust and believe that the ratepayers will, from the Messrs. Clarke and Clarke design* obtain a town hall which will reflect great! credit on tho city, and shall derive much r pleasure upon hearing of the completion of Auckland's architectural monument- " William and Herbert Black.
