THE SITE OF THE CAPITAL.
Sir,— scat of Government questirti docs not appear (o be receiving the, amount of attention it deserves. If the American fleet had been a hoftne fleet the seat of Oh yerninenfc would have very soon been shifted inland for safety, although then considerable difficulty might bo expected; whereas vow it, could be moved to an inland suitable spot easily defensible on one of the railway* —the Otago Central, the Midland. tho Mam Trunk, etc. not only with convenience but also with profit through the difference in the value of land in Wellington and the selected site. The capital was removed from Auckland to » place in Cook Strait to bo selected by an independent Commission appoints by Parliament. A similar Commission ought now to-be anpointed to decide as to where inland would bo the most suitable place for the capital, and J venture to- cay that a resolution iJ that effect would receive the support of Pan hament. The removal inland has been suegested for years, lout no such favourable opportunity as the present for shifting it haa presented itself, s.nd is not likely to recur E.T.
