WAIHI. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] . Waihi, Wednesday. Last evening, at the Victoria Hall. Waikino, Mr. if I. Armstrong, one of the Labour candidates for the Ohinemuri seat, delivered a political speech to a good attendance. The speaker largely followed the lines of his Waihi address, and advocated the erection by- the Government of public batteries, with a view to stimulating the more vigorous prospecting of the gold-bear-ing areas of the district. A special meeting of the Waihi Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor .-r. J. Newth) presiding, for the purpose of appointing delegates for a deputation to wait upon tiie Minister for Public Works in connection with the East Coast railway. The Mayor and Mr. J. Foster were appointed delegates for the Council to accompany the deputation proceeding to Wellington on the 31st inst., and were also instructed to wait upon Ministers in connection with (1) the completion of the Waihi Beach Road, (2) post, office counter delivery between the hours of seven and eight p.m., (3) a directvote for the Waihi District Hotpital, and (4) increased facilities for the settlement of adjacent Crown lands.

He was standing on a piece of ; timber lying on the floor of a residence | being erected for hint when the board over- ! turned, and he fell heavily on his left j side, fracturing a rib. Dr. Edmonds at- | tended him, and it will be some weeks j before Mr. Veale will be able to resume his duties.

The Rev. W. Beck officiated at the marriage, this afternoon of Mr. Thos. Wa-ite, Pukekura, and Miss L. Brown, Wairoa South, and. Mr. Chas. Chase, Morrinsville, and Miss Sarah 'England, of Matamata. The Archidiaconal Conference was resumed this afternoon, and various subjects of Church work will bo discussed to-night. At a choral service at St. Andrew's the Rev. Mr. Hawkins delivered an address on Maori work. The visiting clergy wore afterwards entertained at a conversazione.

The Revs. Macau lay Caldwell and W. Gray Dixon, M.A., have been visiting Cambridge, being commissioned by the Auckland Presbytery to inquire into the spiritual and temporal state of Trinity Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Mr. Caldwell stated that they had found the affairs of the church in a satisfactory state and eulogised the minister (the Rev. J. Gow) and office-bearers. Tho Rev. W. Gray Dixon also said that very encouraging work was going on. He also gave an interesting account of his recent trip Home, and of the churches and assemblies he had visited.

At the last meeting of the Road Board Mr. Robert Swayne presiding, a petition, signal by several settlers, was received, drawing the Board's attention to the bad state of the road between Mr. J. McCann's gate and the Maungakawa Road. The matj ter was deferred, pending further information. Mr. Hugh Ferguson, sen., waited on the Boa.rd and reported that the bridge on the French Pass Road was in an unsafe condition. The Board declined any responsibility, and resolved to telegraph to the Government regarding the condition of the bridge. PAEROA. fBY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Paeroa, Wednesday. At a well-attended meeting, held last night, it was decided to form a Paeroa Club, and officers were elected as follows: — Patron, Mr. H. Poland, M.P.; president, Mr. E. W. Porritt; vice-presidents, Messrs. R. T. Bush and J. Hague Smith and the Rev. Gow; committee, Messrs. MeWatters, - Raebum, Dempsey, Nicholas, Martyr,, Shaw, and the Rev. Reed; secretary, Mr. J. L. Hanna; treasurer, Mr. F. C. Shaw; auditor, Mi-. J. Raebum. The subscription was fixed at £1 Is per annum, with an entrance fee of 10s for those joining after ' the expiry of three months. It was decided that no person under the age of 16 years be admitted as a member. The committee was instructed to draw up rules, and to take steps to have the club registered. HAMILTON. [tROM OCR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] At the monthly meeting of the District High School Committee, Mr. J. A. Young chairman) presided. A letter was read from the Education Board, to the effect that drainage works would be carried out at the school. The chairman said that he did not think the committee had been fairly treated in the matter of accommodation for the school. The Board had disputed the necessity for more accommodation for 10 weeks before they consented to the occupation of a room in the Town Hall. The secretary of the Education Board wrote that tho Board had resolved to renew- the application to the Minister for a special grant to provide the additional accommodation required. He also intimated that the Board had determined to take immediate steps to procure lot 12 and part of lot 11 as a site for a technical school, the cost of transfer, etc.. to be defrayed out of the money subscribed towards the cost of the school. The chairman explained that tho sections were situated at the back of the present school grounds, and facing the railway. Mr. Worsley, headmaster, reported that the attendance during the last four weeks at the primary school had averaged 300 and 46 in the secondary school. TE AROHA. [FROM OCR OWN' CORRESPONDENT.] The To Aroha Brass Band, which lias been in a comatose condition for the past two or three years, has been resuscitated. The following officers have been elected: — Patron, Captain Montgomery; president, the Mayor (Mr. R. L. Somers); vice-presi-dents, the business people of To Aroha; secretary and treasurer, Mr. H. Atkinson; conductor, Mr. T. Donovan bandmaster, Mr. L. Bnchan; committee, Messrs. Geo. Frith, R. Fawcett, Bowks, Bygrave, Hill, MeCarthny, and the officers ex officio; I librarians, Messrs. Jennings and Maxwell.

HUNTLY. [from our own correspondent.] A successful bazaar was held in the Volunteer Hall last week, the object of which—the formation of the nucleus of a fund for the erection of a Parish Had in connection with St. Paul's Anglican Church —benefited to the tune of some £40. On both nights the amateur saleswomen were kept fairly busy, the bazaar being largely patronised. Mrs. Porter, who was mainly responsible for the affair, is to be congratulated on the success which has attended her efforts. As a result of a recent accident, caused bv a blow from a piece of coal, Mr. Timothy Callaghan, who is in the Auckland Hospital at present, has lost the use of one of his eyes.. He is one of the oldest and most respected miners in the district. The voters' rolls for the Wa-ikato and Franklin districts have been completed, and are open for public inspection. The concluding social of the series organised bv the ladies of Huntly. with a view to raising the funds necessary for the purchase of a banner for presentation to the local Lodge of Oddfellows, was held in the Masonic Hall on Tuesday night, and proved as successful as its predecessors. The joint secretaries. Misses G. Johnston and Parkes, are to be congratulated on their efforts. The members of the Huntly Town Board are still engaged in drafting by-laws, for which purpose special meetings have been held every alternate Thursday.

TIUNI.'A. The remains of the late Mr. .John Knobs, of Paparimu, were buried at llurma on the, 23rd inst-. Mr. Knobs was 78 years of age and a resident, of nearly 40 years in lltunia and Paparimu. Sixty horsemen "followed his remains to the grave, and" there were 100 people at the graveside. The local body has obtained a substantial giant for the new main road and hopes to have it open for frame in four months. The road has been 12 years in progress. The lambing season is in full swing, and results are fair, though feed is very scarce, being much cut; tip by continual frosts, and with the loss of the turnip crops the outlook is bad unless there is a very early spring. It is stated' that the factory is to open on September 1 if the quantity of milk supply warrants the opening.
