CHRISTCHURCH UNEMPLOYED

LABOURER RECEIVES A LEGACY. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CkristchurCh, Monday. Mr. Hagger, of the local Labour Bureau, in conversation with a reporter stated that during the last fortnight the Department had found employment for over 100 men at Broken River, 39 being snt out there on Saturday. A number of the applicants, he said, were casual farm labourers, who had been unable to obtain work in the country. Up to date the City Council has given work to some 40 or 50 applicants, and there were only a few desultory callers today. A man who has,, for the last few days been working on the river banks, called on the city surveyor this morning and informed him that he had relinquished the pick and shovel, as he had just received news from England that a legacy of £2000 had ; been left to him. He thanked, the Council for finding him work. . *-' - , STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER. • '[by TELEGRAPH. press association.] Wellington, Monday. ' Speaking to a press representative to-day, the Hon. W. Hall-Jones (Minister for Publie Works) said he could find work for hundreds of men on co-operative works, and, in view of that fact, he could not see why men who were physically capable of work should stay in the towns, and, as was done in Clu-istclutrch, go round with' a cart and collect food.
