HIGH COMMISSIONERSHIP.
WHO WILL BE APPOINTED '' \
PRIME MINISTER'S STATEMENT.
[I)T TELEGRAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
Wellington, Monday. After the Cabinet meeting to-day the Prime Minister, replying to questions regarding various rumours concerning the Hon. \V. P. Reeves' successor, said, "You may give an emphatic denial to the statement that I intend to take the High Commissionership. I have not the slightest intention of going to London, and the reason why I stated in the House on Friday that a new appointment cannot be made till October, after the receipt of the resignation, is that the appointment is made by warrant under statute law, and the Government has no power to issue a fresh warrant until the expiry of the old one. I am, hot responsible fot tin rumours, but I may say that the matter of Mr. Reeves' successor has not been discussed by Cabinet since his cablegram was received, nor will Cabinet discuss the question for some time to come."
The name of Mr. Tregear has been mentioned in addition to those already rumoured.
