MUD VOLCANO.

ALARM AT GISBORNE. '

SIX ACRES OF LAND COVERED.

[BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

Gisborne, Monday. A loud noise, which could be heard for over a mile, caused some alarm in the Waimata Valley on Saturday night, the cause being the eruption of the mud springs on the property of Mr. Langdon (formerly Mr. Delatour's). The eruption started at 9.10, and lasted lor over half an hour, naturally causing much uneasiness. The outburst could be seen from the store, the scene of the springs being about a mile and a-half from the road.

The material thrown up was a bluishcoloured clay, and an idea of the quantity ejected can be obtained from the fact that a creek has been filled up to a depth of 40ft with the mud, and about six acres of ground have been covered. The mud is cold. About five years ago there was an eruption at these springs.

Latest reports show that the springs have quietened down, and it is hoped that the quantity emitted will have the effect of a safety-valve for many years to come.
