The Turkish troops which were sent to the island of Samoa, off the coast of Asia Minor, owing to disturbances following the Governor's refusal to summon the Assembly, killed eighty women and children in the first day's fighting on the island. These unfortunates had taken refuge in the interior of the island, and were without the protection of the male portion of the inhabitants. ■ The latter are now armed, and . are occupying the heights around Vathi, the chief town of the inland, (Received June 1, 11.45 p.m.) Athens, .Time 1. . The Turkish cruiser Hamidiea, meeting with a hostile reception at Vathi, fired two rounds of blank ammunition, which stopped th * firing from the island. Tranquillity now prevails. A semi-official report at Athens states that Turkish soldiers repeatedly fired at the Consulates, and those defending the Governor's palace fired at; passers-by indiscriminately.
