A wonDt;Ri' pl story is told of a- trick played by half a dozen men, who,rang at the door of a- private house in Paris, and made their way into the drawing-room before the servant could announce their arrival- The leader of the party had donned an official scarf, and, introducing himself as a police commissary, promptly seized 4000 francs which were lying on the table as stakes in a game of poker, and, saying that lie would not trouble the host- and his attests' to call at his office that evening, but would be obliged if they would do so the next morning, bowed politely and withdrew with his escort. When, however, the players called punctually at the office the next '"da their visit created visible surprise, and from the explanation which followed they soon learnt to their disgust that no polieo commissary had been near them, and that they had been tricked and their 'money taken from them by a gang of thieves. : ' '
