WAGES BOARDS.

FIXING THE MINIMUM. By Telegraph.—Press Association.— London, May 7. Mi:. Ernest Aves, the well-known writer on economics, who recently toured Australasia, in giving evidence before the Home-work Committee of the House of Commons, which has , been sitting for some months, stated that though Wages Boards had worked well in Australia in fixing the legal minimum wages, their operation as regarded the British trades presented formidable difficulties, and in the event of a large increase in Australian immigration it would probably be impossible to maintain the present rate of wages. v Speaking generally, the success of the Board's determination was contingent upon protection, and' the tendency of their determinations was to weaken trade unions.
