SUBSIDISING THE PRESS.
NEWS OF THE COLONIES. CANADA AND AUSTRALIA.By Telegraph.— Association.—Copyright (Received May 8, 10 p.m.) London, May 8. The Standard announces the issue of a weekly supplement .entitled The Standard of the Empire," to be distributed gratis in Thursday's issues of the Standard, containing cable and other news of all sorts from the colonies, supplied by the Agents-General and special writers. It is not officially stated, but is believed to be correct, that the Standard receives a heavy subvention from Canada and a smallei subvention from the Commonwealth for this service. This is considered to be a most unusual circumstance in English journalism. The Standard is one of - the numerous papers controlled by Mr. C. Arthur Pearson and is conducted in the interests of tariff reform. Quite recently the Federal Parliament voted £20,000 for the purpose of advertising Australia abroad.
